I was using the Pilot G-2 refills in a Rotring rollerball for a while. I like the way rollerballs work, but in some ways they seem to mix the worst of both ball points and fountain pens. Liquid ink that smears and doesn't always work well on some papers, and the greased-nail feel that many ball points have.

I only need one ballpoint. I like to have one on my person in case I run into some carbon (or carbonless) copy forms, or in case I need to loan a pen to somebody. A Fisher Space Pen has filled that role for many years with minimal fuss.

Beyond that, it's all fountain pens. My favorites are Sheaffers: Snorkels, Imperials, and lately I've discovered the Targa. I got a chrome-plated Targa with a fine steel nib for my normal everyday scribbling, and a gold-plated Targa with an oblique 14K gold nib for bold signatures and special notes. It's a great combination.

The chrome pen also came with a matching, slim ballpoint. It's very nifty, and I actually think I may carry it for a while in place of the Space Pen. Sheaffer ballpoint refills are nothing to brag about, but I found I could take a Parker-style gel refill and trim the plastic tail to make it fit perfectly.
