I’m in the middle of a road trip vacation, and while driving from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Mackinaw City we stayed at a Hampton Inn in Wausau, Wisconsin.
Now, the hotel itself was fine. It was actually better than fine - the folks at the front desk were very helpful when we checked in, and even put us in the perfect room - and we had a great night.
The awesome part is the deal I got on one of their lap desks. If you’ve stayed at a Hampton Inn, you know that they have these nifty lap desks in their rooms. They’re pretty nice, with elastic bands to keep papers in place and a nice faux leather cusion on the back. As lap desks go, they’re pretty nice - nicer than I’ve found just about anywhere. So I decided to get one - or at least ask what they cost.
Take a guess…
Sixteen dollars.
Can you believe it? There isn’t even a Hampton Inn logo on it anywhere. I’m guessing that price requires a paid stay, but if you’re staying anyway it’s a real bargain.
One of the ways I record my thoughts, particularly at trade shows, is with a voice recorder. Sony has a new one out, their ICD-CX50 visual voice recorder. This unit combines a voice recorder with a 1.2 megapixel camera, along with an LCD.

The CX50 does not come with removable memory, or voice to print software to convert your spoken words into written ones. It does come with a rechargeable battery, which can be charged through the USB cable or a wall adapter.
So, does it make sense to combine a voice recorder with a camera? Sure, although I always thought they were called video recorders
Seriously, at $400, I’m not likely to invest in one yet. I have a nice little digital camera along with a voice recorder, and so far I haven’t needed them to be in the same machine.
Here’s an interesting post that includes a bit on Moleskine vs. PDA. I’m addicted equally to both, but easily understand the temptation to simplify by getting rid of one or the other. Certainly, my PDA does a better job of reminding me of meetings, but sketching on one is all but impossible.
